Aumentare la consapevolezza di un cane
c’è una vasta gamma di intelligenza dal cane all’altra proprio come c’è dall’essere umano all’uomo.
Non possiamo fare molto per aumentare la vera intelligenza dei nostri cani, ma possiamo aumentare la loro consapevolezza di se stessi e di come si adattano a ciò che si adattano.
Tutti i cani possono imparare.
L’introduzione di un cane in tanti ambienti, scenari e ostacoli diversi possibili influenza il modo in cui pensa e si comporta in determinate situazioni. Un cane che ha sperimentato di più farà scelte migliori. Agirà più intelligente rispetto ad altri cani.
Una persona che ha viaggiato più o studiato più di altre non è necessariamente più intelligente, ma può usare le sue esperienze per prendere decisioni più intelligenti. È lo stesso per i cani.
Ad esempio, circa un terzo dei cani che cammino si districerà se si prendono le gambe al guinzaglio. Manouverno i loro corpi calpestando i guinzagli, eseguendo il backup e tornando in giro, il tutto nell’ordine corretto. Gli altri due terzi dei cani che cammino rimarranno lì in attesa del mio aiuto. Alcuni cani non sembrano nemmeno capire perché sono bloccati.
I cani che sanno come districarsi non sono necessariamente le razze di solito accreditate per essere più intelligenti (pastori tedeschi, confini, pastori australiani, ecc.). Invece, sono i cani che hanno sperimentato di più con i loro proprietari. I loro proprietari li premiano costantemente per aver pensato!
I cani che “tirano fuori di più” sono molto consapevoli di se stessi e della loro relazione con i loro ambienti e con me. Sono in grado di evitare di aggrovigliarsi ai guinzagli in primo luogo. Evitano anche di urtarmi nelle gambe o tagliarmi. Fanno un contatto visivo. Non reagiscono in modo aggressivo o eccitato ai corridori o ai cani di passaggio. Potrebbero mostrare molto interesse, ma non impazziscono. Fondamentalmente, hanno già visto tutto.
Se un cane raramente esce da casa e cortile, non avrà molta comprensione su come agire o cosa aspettarsi oltre quei confini. Sarà pieno di energia ed eccitazione, per prima cosa, e probabilmente tirerà il guinzaglio, metterà a segno le cose e reagirà a qualcosa di così poco emozionante come una persona che spinge un passeggino.
Il cane potrebbe aver bisogno di aiutare a capire come passare un tronco caduto, saltare da una sporgenza o camminare attraverso una porta automatica.
Se questo suona come il tuo cane, non preoccuparti. Non è mai troppo tardi per aumentare la sua consapevolezza.
Come posso aumentare la consapevolezza del mio cane?
Il modo più semplice per farlo è tirarlo in giro nel “mondo reale” il più possibile.
Porta il tuo cane in nuovi posti
Ho preso ACE in innumerevoli posti e è stato ripagato. Principalmente, non si comporta come un mostro se controlliamo un posto nuovo.
Ace ha fatto passeggiate in molti quartieri e parchi diversi in città. Ha visitato tutti i negozi per animali domestici nella nostra zona. È andato in campeggio e zaino in spalla, ha portato il suo zaino per cani e ha dormito in una tenda. Ha frequentato fiere, vendite di garage e raccolte di fondi. È andato a tornei di softball, maratone e partite di rugby (insieme alle feste di rugby).
Ace va a picnics e viaggi al lago e giri in bicicletta. Va per girare in barca, salta giù dal molo e nuota. Ha partecipato a una gara di 5 miglia completa di band dal vivo, uno sparo all’inizio della gara e le persone che urlano. Ha preso diverse lezioni di agilità e obbedienza. È stato con pistole e fuochi d’artificio. Si arrampica sull’attrezzatura per parchi giochi. Ha visitato case di cura, chiese e scuole. L’ho lasciato in diversi cani da bordo e daycare di cani e con vari amici e familiari.
Tutti quanto sopra sono scenari di tutti i giorni in cui il tuo cane potrebbe anche prendere parte. Non è troppo difficile trovare posti per portare il tuo cane, anche se è semplice come camminarlo in un nuovo quartiere ogni giorno. Sei sicuro di imbatterti in qualcosa di nuovo.
Allena il tuo cane per agilità o crea i tuoi ostacoli
I cani adorano l’agilità! Adorano le sfide dell’arrampicata, strisciando e saltando a velocità veloci. Ace ama l’agilità, ma adora anche giocare nelle attrezzature per parchi giochi, camminare su raggi e tronchi e saltare su ostacoli casuali che ho messo insieme a casa.
Alcuni cani saranno titubanti a salire su diversi ostacoli perché gli è stato detto “no” ogni volta che cercano di salire sui mobili. Quindi insegna al tuo cane che va bene scalare quando ottiene il permesso. Usa comandi come “up” o “sedia” o “salire”. Premia il tuo cane per aver fatto piccoli tentativi. Se mette una zampa, digli quanto è bravo e dargli una sorpresa. Fallo alcune volte e poi continua a sfidarlo a andare un po ‘oltre. Due zampe, tre zampe.
Assicurati di insegnare anche alla parola “off” da usare quando non vuoi che il tuo cane salti su di te o sappia i mobili. Per Ace, “off” significa “mantenere tutte e quattro le zampe a terra”.
Molto presto avrai un cane che può salire su uno sgabello da bar o sederti al piano!
Impostaremental challenges for your dog
Have you ever heard of those exercises to test your dog’s intelligence? One trick is to put a blanket over your dog’s head and see if he can figure out how to get out. Some dogs will get out instantly. Others will take a few seconds. Some dogs will just stand there waiting for help because they’ve been conditioned not to think for themselves.
Don’t use exercises like this to judge your dog’s intelligence. Instead, use them to test your dog’s awareness. If he can’t figure out how to get a blanket off his head, then encourage him to figure it out himself and reward him when he does. treat it like he’s won an Olympic gold medal! The next time you throw a blanket over his head, he won’t be so confused.
There are all kinds of mental challenges you can set up for your dog. I put treats under cups and hide them around the house for Ace to find. He has to use his nose to find the treats and then knock over the cups with his paws or nose. sometimes I hide the treats under rugs or above his head, like on a bookshelf or on top of a scratching post. You’d be surprised how many dogs don’t seem to understand the concept of looking up.
Teach your dog commands for directions like “back up” or “turn”
Ace loves to “back up”! and it’s really increased his awareness. He has to be aware of what’s around him so he doesn’t back right into a table or a wall. He will now “back up” while turning corners, and we are working on backing up the stairs (see video below). This is good exercise for him because he uses his muscles differently. It also encourages him to think about himself in a different way.
To teach your dog to back up, start by rewarding him for very small successes. say “back up” and then walk directly into him so he automatically takes a step back. Ripetere. Ripetere. Ripetere. build your distance slowly over time.
The “turn” command comes in handy when we are out biking. I haven’t taken the time to teach Ace “right” or “left,” but when I say “turn,” he knows we will be switching directions so he pays very close attention to where he is in relation to my bike.
Dogs make associations based on past experiences
Just because a dog knows how to lie down on command at home doesn’t mean he will lie down on command at the dog park. But, if a dog’s owner practices commands with him in many areas and situations, the dog will soon catch on.
For example, I taught Ace commands such as “climb it,” “crawl” and “jump” during agility practice. but now they come in handy when I want to tell my dog the safest way to get from point A to point B – from the dock to a boat, for example. My dog is an awkward klutz, but he has learned how to control his body and how to balance himself when needed.
As another example, last weekend we were visiting some friends, and Ace was in their kitchen showing off his begging skills. Josh gave him the command “out!” which means “Get your butt out of the kitchen!” Ace understood this and walked out of the kitchen to the place where the linoleum met the carpet and lied down. He knew what to do even though he’s never been in our friends’ apartment before.
The point is, our dogs are capable of much more than we give them credit for. It’s our job to take the time to teach them and to lead them. A smart dog can do really stupid things if he’s not aware of how he fits into an environment. A border collie might be “smart enough” to break out of his gated yard, but he might also be “dumb enough” to run right into a automobile if he’s unaware of how he fits into his environment beyond the backyard.
My mutt is by no means a genius when it comes to dogs. After all, he might be part dane! but he still has a vocabulary of at least 70 words, and he knows how to “behave” in a variety of situations. He knows how to pay attention and how to re-group. and yes, he knows how to maneuver his body in order to untangle himself from his leash.
